Her family said they were in no way related to Silvio Berlusconi, even if now they are close friends, but they didn’t want to say when their relationship began.

Ghazal singer Chitra Singh's daughter hanged herself to death at her home in Mumbai, the police said on Friday.

According to police, Monica Choudhary's body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her suburban home on Friday afternoon.  Monica, 46, was Chitra's daughter from her first marriage before she married famous ghazal singer Jagjit Singh in 1969.  Deputy commissioner of police N Kaushik said: "As per our preliminary investigations, she had a troubled life and was in a state of depression. In early 90's, Jagjit and Chitra Singh's only son Vivek was killed in a road accident.  Kaushik said that Monica's husband, and Jagjit and Chitra Singh are currently abroad.

A good news for Security agencies : Detecting sulphur in just one hair could help nab a terrorist

In a new study, scientists have come up with a method that could be used to nab terrorists, by detecting how proportions of isotopes in a chemical like sulphur vary throughout the length of a single hair.
The mid-term objective is to be able to use these methods to track the geographical movements of people, including international crime suspects and victims.
In order to carry out this study, the scientists focused on the most abundant sulphur isotopes in hair keratin - sulphur-32 (32S), which accounts for about 95 percent, and sulphur-34 (34S), which makes up around 4 percent.
This proportion can change slightly in response to people's diets and if they travel from one country to another, and the technique is able to detect these small variations.
The scientists use a laser that makes contact with the selected fraction of the hair, generating an aerosol, which later ionizes within plasma, with the spectrometer providing the exact proportions of the sulphur isotopes.
"The advantage of this method compared with others is the high resolution resulting from use of the laser," said Rebeca Santamaria-Fernandez of LGC, lead author of the study.
This advance has enabled the scientists to confirm that the sulphur variations in hair can be linked to peoples' geographical movements.
The researchers collected hair samples of more than 4cm in length donated by three volunteers.
Two were permanent residents in the United Kingdom, while the third - dubbed "the traveler" - had spent the past six months in Croatia, Austria, the United Kingdom and Australia.
"We are what we eat, and the small variations in the 34S/32S relationship reflect changes to our diet, which can in turn be related to movements from one country to another," said Justo Giner, another of the study's authors.
The results of the experiment revealed that the traveller's hair showed significant variations in the sulphur isotopes, while changes in the hairs of the two people living in the United Kingdom were minimal, and similar in both samples.
The scientists are confident they will be able to create databases that will one day make it possible to link the relationship between a specific isotope in hair keratin and a country or region, which would be of great help to the police in tracking down international criminals.

"Bing" The New Microsoft Search Engine

Bing, the new search engine Microsoft plans to release, place a fresh focus on "the right ideas," like "organic results, layout and advertising," according to Director-Emerging Media/Client Strategy David Berkowitz of 360i, which demoed the pending product.
"If it's as good as it looks in the demo, this will be the most impressive search experience Microsoft has offered," he vowed.
The Bing search engine places emphasis on image and videos; on a more practical level, it filters data and ecommerce to give users more specific product information, like inventory in stock and prices at retail stores.
Kumo was the code name for Bing within Microsoft.

Microsoft tested Bing internally from March, but has not provided a launch date, though word has it the engine will go live in the next handful of weeks — coinciding with the debut of a major ad campaign.

In April 2009, Microsoft/Windows Live Search dominated all of 9.9% of US-based searches, up 7.2% year over year. It fell behind Google, at 64% of market share; and Yahoo, at 16.3%.

Among shopping-specific search engines, however, Windows Live Search enjoyed a 615% increase in total visitors and was the fastest growing shopping search provider in April. This increase is due in part to the well-received Live Search Cashback program, in which Microsoft promises to pay consumers back for purchasing products its search engine helped find.

Searches on shopping-specific engines comprise between one and two percent of total search activity.

Alice Munro wins Booker

Alice Munro, one of Canada's most celebrated writers, has pipped Mahasweta Devi and V S Naipaul to win the third Man Booker International Prize. Devi and Naipaul were among 13 other writers who were shortlisted for the award this year.

The prize worth 60,000 pound (USD 95,000) is awarded once every two years to recognise a living author for his/her contribution to literature and to highlight the author's creativity and development on a global scale. It was first awarded to Ismail Kadare in 2005.

The 77-year-old author, popular for her short stories, said: "I am totally amazed and delighted." The judging panel which included Jane Smiley, writer; Amit Chaudhuri, writer, academic and musician and Andrey Kurkov, essay and film script writer, praised Munro saying she "brings as much depth, wisdom and precision to every story as most novelists bring to a lifetime of novels".

"To read Alice Munro is to learn something every time that you never thought of before," the panel said. Peter Clarke, Chief Executive, Man Group plc said: "Since her first collection of stories was published in 1968, Alice Munro has been highly acclaimed as the contemporary master of the short fiction genre".

About Alice

Alice Munro was born in the town of Wingham, Ontario into a family of fox and poultry farmers. Her father was Robert Eric Laidlaw and her mother, a school teacher, was Anne Clarke Laidlaw (née Chamney). She began writing as a teenager and published her first story, "The Dimensions of a Shadow," while a student at the University of Western Ontario in 1950. During this period she worked as a waitress, tobacco picker and library clerk. In 1951, she left the university, in which she had been majoring in English since 1949, to marry James Munro and move to Vancouver, British Columbia. Her daughters Sheila, Catherine, and Jenny were born in 1953, 1955, and 1957 respectively; Catherine died 15 hours after birth. In 1963, the Munros moved to Victoria where they opened Munro's Books. In 1966, their daughter Andrea was born.

Alice Munro's first collection of stories, Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), was highly acclaimed and won that year’s Governor General's Award, Canada’s highest literary prize. Alice and James Munro were divorced in 1972. She returned to Ontario to become Writer-in-Residence at the University of Western Ontario. In 1976 she married Gerald Fremlin, a geographer. The couple moved to a farm outside Clinton, Ontario. They have since moved from the farm to a house in the town of Clinton, Ontario.

In 1978, Munro's collection of interlinked stories, Who Do You Think You Are?, was published (titled The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rosein the United States).
